The fun of radio controlled (RC) cars is growing in popularity. There are two main types of cars for the beginner to choose from. Electric RC cars that run on a rechargeable battery and the nitro cars which run on fuel. Many of the nitro RC cars routinely hit speeds of up to 70 MPH and usually look like miniatures of the cars they are modeled after. Whichever type you decide to go with, you're sure to enjoy this new sport that allows you to control the action via remote control.
RC Cars can be a very exciting hobby. When you're making a choice for your first RC car or truck there are a few things to consider that will ensure you make the best choice for the type of driving you intend on doing with your RC vehicle.
Handling Ease
This is a consideration for any beginner. There is no point in starting off with more RC car than you can handle, you will wind up with a wrecked RC car before you even get to hone your RC skills. Many enthusiasts start off with an electric RC vehicle. They require almost no assembly, very little maintenance and will allow you to get your RC control skills up to par before you graduate to a nitro RC car.
Maintenance Ease
This is another important point when you're choosing an RC vehicle. Most RC vehicles are easy to maintain, however electric RC vehicles have even less maintenance than a nitro vehicle. Nitro vehicles will need to be cleaned, ideally after each use to make sure there is not fuel/oil build up and a clean engine runs much better than one allowed to get gunked up.
If you go for the nitro, the type of motor that your car has should be considered. Nitro RC cars and trucks have two basic types of engines. Two-stroke and four-stroke. An easy way to understand the difference between these two types of engines is that a two-stroke engine needs to run on a gas and oil mixture like your lawn mower does. A four-stroke engine has a reservoir of oil and runs on fuel only - no mixing necessary. The advantages of a two-stroke engine are that it will produce higher RPMs and is better for racing. A four-stroke engine has a lot more power and is a superior choice for offroad use, obstacle courses and climbing competitions.
Use these tips to choose the best RC car for your playtime and you'll find yourself enjoying a whole new sport. Consider joining a group in your town that will allow you to interact with other RC enthusiasts and you can learn even more tips and tricks for racing or other competitions with your RC vehicle.
